Keeping the Mosquitos Away

Perhaps nothing will ruin the ambiance of your patio and deck more than mosquitos and flies. They truly are the worst. Thankfully, with a few tweaks to your outdoor living space during peak bug season, you can help keep these pesky bugs away and enjoy the great outdoors a little more.

Light Your Wood-Burning Fire

Wood-burning fire pits emit smoke, which is a natural deterrent for mosquitoes. Knowing that the cozy atmosphere of the fireplace will also keep you itch and pest-free is another great reason to take advantage of your new feature.

Light Tiki Torches

Placing tiki torches with citronella around your backyard can also help provide a barrier to deter mosquitoes from entering your space.

Make Your Own Bug Repellent

Eucalyptus, lavender, and witch hazel are all known natural bug repellents. You can use these essential oils to create your own recipe for bug repellent. Simply mix one part lemon eucalyptus or lavender oil with ten parts witch hazel in a spray bottle. Then, shake and spray on your skin while you’re outdoors.

Place a Shield on Your Dinner Table

If you’re ready to enjoy dinner outside, place a patio shield-repellent device, such as Thermacell or mosquito-repellent lantern, on your patio table. This will use a heat shield to keep mosquitos and flies away within a 15-foot radius.
